The popularity of golf estate homes continues to grow

During the Covid-induced property boom, demand for golf estate homes increased when work-from-home space and ‘room to breathe’ fuelled a growing demand for more spacious properties.

South Africa is no stranger to golf estates, combining some of the best golf courses in the world, and a need for secure living has seen the rise in its popularity. And during the pandemic-induced property boom, growth on average in these estates where around 8% to 10%.

This is according to new research from Seeff Property Group. While research from New World Wealth reports that despite a dip in popularity over the past decade, golf remains by far the most popular hobby for centi-millionaires globally, followed by art collecting in 2nd place and cycling in 3rd place. 

New World Wealth recently announced their ten best golf courses in Africa, which saw five South African courses make the list:

Fancourt Links - Western Cape

• Highland Gate - Mpumalanga

• Leopard Creek - Mpumalanga

Steyn City - Gauteng

Zimbali - KwaZulu Natal

All of these courses also offer a residential component.

The statistics from Seeff revealed that the highest volume of golf estate sales has been in the R3 million to R14 million range. For upper-end estates, it ranged between R6 million and R18 million with a few exceptional sales above R20 million.

Cape golf estates are achieving some of the highest prices in the country. Top golf estates such as Steenberg in Constantia, Cape Town now boast a median price of R13.9 million. The current average for Fancourt in George is around R8.4 million.
