Mixed Use for sale
Operate a heritage boutique guesthouse on Oudtshoorn’s route to the Cango Caves, steps from town — National Monument with original Victorian trellis, pool and seven ensuite rooms.
Every house has a story to tell, and so the story goes that this architectural gem located on Oudtshoorn’s main tourist route, en route to the world-famous Cango Caves. This is one of the oldest and finest examples of architecture from the early days in Oudtshoorn.
Recorded history states that the Village of Oudtshoorn, originally known as “Veldskoendorp” (leather shoe town), was laid out in 1847 on the farm Hartebeestrivier. Six years later (1853), this heritage home was built by Mr J.H.Mulder, inspired by typical Cape vernacular style architecture combined with traditional Victorian and Klein Karoo elements. The original Victorian trelliswork is perfectly intact, added around the turn of the Century. The 'lei-watersloot' running in front of the house is the last remaining section of the original open water lead-lined furrow, which supplied water to the Oudtshoorn of old. To preserve the water furrow, Victorian trellis and historical facade, the property was declared a National Monument in 1988.
As a matter of interest, “Veldskoendorp” was renamed “Oudtshoorn” after Baron Pieter van Rheede van Oudtshoorn, who came to South Africa in 1741 and was appointed Governor of the Cape in 1772. He died aboard ship while returning to the Cape in 1773.
Today this impeccably renovated and maintained heritage home accommodates a popular, well-known and well-established boutique guesthouse, which has been in operation for many years. The property is offered for sale as a going concern, fully furnished and operational.
