A Historic Pietermaritzburg Estate Where Heritage Meets Exceptional Family Living

Steeped in history and rich in character, this remarkable Victorian-colonial residence offers a rare opportunity to own a piece of Pietermaritzburg's architectural heritage. Dating back to 1894, the home was originally built by the prominent Ireland family, known for their retail presence in Pietermaritzburg, and has since evolved through generations of family ownership, with thoughtful extensions and modernisations adding to its distinctive appeal.

Set on approximately 1.3 hectares of established, productive grounds, this is far more than a grand family residence. It is a lifestyle property with room to grow, entertain, accommodate extended family and create lasting memories for generations to come.

Inside, timeless architectural features blend with modern comforts. High ceilings, beautiful wooden floors and fireplaces speak to the home's historic charm, while generous proportions and multiple living spaces offer flexibility for contemporary family life.

The home boasts six bedrooms and five-and-a-half bathrooms, complemented by five lounges that provide ample room for relaxed family living and formal entertaining. A particularly inviting living area features elegant glass-panel doors that open toward beautiful dam views, creating a wonderful connection between the interior and the surrounding landscape.

For those who love to entertain, the property offers an exceptional selection of leisure facilities, including a swimming pool, an impressive pool house, a sauna, a tennis court and a pool table. Whether hosting family gatherings, enjoying a relaxed afternoon beside the pool or entertaining guests, there is space here for every occasion.

One of the estate's most distinctive features is its abundance of accommodation options. In addition to the main residence, the property offers two separate accommodation areas, providing flexibility for multigenerational living, visiting guests, extended family or staff. These include a cottage situated behind the double garage, and separate staff quarters.

The expansive grounds are a destination in their own right. Established gardens and mature trees create a sense of privacy and tranquillity, while the productive landscape offers an abundance of seasonal produce, from citrus fruits and berries to pecan nuts and avocados. Even the presence of a distinctive cotton-producing tree adds to the character and individuality of this remarkable setting.

With four garages and additional covered parking, there is ample space for vehicles and practical day-to-day needs.

Properties of this nature are becoming increasingly rare. Combining historical significance, generous accommodation, extensive leisure facilities and productive grounds, this estate offers an exceptional opportunity for buyers seeking a home with character, scale and the versatility to accommodate more than one generation.

Discover a home where history lives on, where family traditions can flourish, and where the possibilities extend well beyond the walls of the main residence.
