R40 million for a Cape Dutch home in the UK

Built in the 1920's and on the market for R40 million, a Cape Dutch home in Devon, England pays homage to the uniquely South African design.

It wouldn't be strange to find a Cape Dutch home in Stellenbosch, Paarl or Somerset West but a recently listed property boasts all the iconic trademarks of a Cape Dutch style home.

From the whitewashed walls, wide-curved gables to the thatched roofs. Imported by Dutch settlers in the 17th century and based on the townhouses of Amsterdam, this style of architecture represents some of South Africa’s oldest churches and homes.

Although most popular during Cape Town’s formative years, the style experienced a revival towards the end of the 19th century and moved into other parts of the country.

Colonel F P Loveband started building the home in 1924 in Budleigh Salterton, a small town on the coast of East Devon and modelled it after a home he stayed in while on military duty in South Africa. The home was called Tordown and stood out among the chicken farms in the area.

The home didn't just grab the attention of the locals but also featured in an edition of The Architects Journal on 9 November 1927. At the time, the four-bedroom house was valued at £2,000. Fifty years later it sold for £70,000. Today it’s on the market for £2 million (roughly R40.1 million), with the sale being handled by real estate agency Knight Frank.

The five-bedroom, five-bathroom, 383-square metre home on 11a Northview Road is less than a kilometre away from Budleigh Salterton beach. There’s also an almost 50-square metre living room area, a 30-square metre dining room, study, and utility room.

It features a double garage – and workshop area – with an outside driveway that can fit five cars. The large garden produces apples, plums, and pears, featuring a greenhouse, summerhouse and garden shed.

The house even features a lift which operates between the two floors and has a rated load of three adults or 250kg.

A private path at the rear of the house meanders past the East Devon Golf Course and provides views across the estuary to Berry Head and South Devon coastal resorts.
