Sip Moët & Chandon at the highest urban bar in Africa

The Leanardo - the iconic mixed-use property situated in the heart of the richest square mile in Africa - can now boast with being home to the highest urban bar in Africa.

Sitting atop the skyscraper on the 57th and top floor, Alto234 derived its name from the Latin word for height - alto - and the 234 meters tall at which the building stands. Making this the not only the highest place to be seen but also the trendiest.

Alto234 features breathtaking 360-degree views of the iconic urban skylines and city-scapes that is Johannesburg.

The interior design of the space was undertaken by Varoom Interiors and pays to homage to the structure of the building by highlighting the impressive structural components  - from the exposed concrete, visible roof fins, and steel supports.

To ensure all eyes are on the awe-inspiring vistas, the decor was designed with a modern minimalist eye while paying homage to its African roots with prints in shades of green and orange. This not only mimics the one-of-a-kind sunsets but also reflects on the man-made forest that sprawls throughout Johannesburg's most iconic suburbs. The black and brass metal finishes give a stately nod to not only the glitz and glam that the city is known for but also to the rich mining heritage on which the city was built.

The bar is split into seven different spaces from larger lounge suites, to smaller look-out points, and intimate dining nooks - each area fitted with custom-designed furniture that ensures multi-functional usage. Three gas fire-pits will also warm the lounge seating on cooler days, making for an ambient and cosier setting.

Sandton is almost synonymous with Moët & Chandon Champagne, and at Alto234 it is no different - the bar has been gifted with a special edition Moët Mini Machine as a permanent feature – which was airlifted and delivered to the rooftop via helicopter - causing much intrigue and speculation online, last week. The exclusive to Alto234 Moët Mini Machine allows patrons the opportunity to order 200ml Moët Mini bottles (with golden sippers of course) using Moët tokens.

Speaking of the partnership Moët & Chandon distributor, The Really Great Brand Company’s portfolio manager Patrick Leslie is thrilled with the collaboration “We have a longstanding relationship with the Legacy group and from the beginning, we said that if there was to ever be a rooftop bar on The Leonardo we’d want to be a part of it. It’s a proper skyscraper and is reminiscent of many world-class global establishments. The Moët Mini Machine makes it all the more special, it’s the only one in Africa. It’ll be the best place in the country to have sunset drinks - the perfect Moët moment - the bubbles, the golden sippers, beautiful sunsets and the unrivalled views over the City of Gold”

The award-winning Aurum restaurant at The Leonardo will run the bar and food offering ensuring that your dining experience at Alto234 will be nothing less than spectacular.

Looking towards the menu, the team at Aurum has pulled out all the stops, creating a luxurious tapas menu and gourmet snack offering. Expect the likes of the Alto Oyster – served with caviar, pear, and coriander; the wagyu brisket which arrives atop a rich bone marrow brioche; and langoustine and pork belly accompanied by elements of miso pear, beer, and pickled mustards. The snacks section sees the classics given a luxe twist too and includes wagyu biltong as well as truffled cashew nuts

Want to experience the incredible Alto234 for yourself? Make sure to book on their website for bookings less than six people or email alto234res@legacyhotels.co.za for larger parties.
