Paarl named “Town of the Year” for Western Cape

Paarl has been announced as the winner of the “Town of the Year” for the Western Cape 2013 by the popular Afrikaans TV magazine programme Kwêla.

Pam Golding Properties (PGP) says the award is a fitting accolade not only for the town’s scenic beauty and historic homes, but also for its warm community spirit.

“The Kwêla accolade is a highly sought-after one, bringing with it exceptional publicity for the town as well as a sizable marketing budget as a prize,” says PGP’s area manager for Paarl, Wellington and Franschhoek, Surina du Toit. “The local businesses and especially the hospitality industry will certainly benefit from the exposure. But essentially, the award confirms what residents already know all too well – that this is a highly desirable place to live, with a close-knit community, a beautiful selection of homes, and superb facilities and amenities.”

One of the town’s most appealing factors is its blend of old and new, with historic homes dating back several hundred years standing comfortably alongside new and more modern residences. Du Toit says most development has been sympathetically carried out to preserve the unique historic character of the town, which is the third oldest in South Africa. The first farms in the area were granted in 1687 at the foot of the landmark Paarl mountain, and the area has enjoyed an international reputation for its abundant vine and fruit industries, ever since.

“Today Paarl offers a mix of properties, from secure lifestyle and golf estates to comfortable modern family homes, historic Cape Dutch homesteads and both lifestyle and commercial farms,” says du Toit. “Pricing is highly competitive, especially when one considers the magnificent scenic surroundings and the fact that the town is only 60km from Cape Town and its big city amenities, including the international airport.  One can still obtain a bachelor apartment in the town centre for under R500 000, while family homes can be purchased for between R1 million and R3 million, going up to around R4 million for larger and more luxurious homes on bigger erven.  There are also a number of superb residential secure estates such as Pearl Valley and Boschenmeer Golf Estates and Val de Vie Polo Estate, where one can obtain a townhouse from around R1.4 million or a larger family home for R2 million to R3.5 million, while enjoying top security and excellent lifestyle features.”

Paarl has an extremely well-established infrastructure, including excellent medical, recreational and sporting facilities, and some of the country’s top-rated schools. This makes it particularly appealing to family buyers, who can raise their children in a wholesome and healthy environment, without sacrificing on educational quality.  The town is also a popular choice for retirees who enjoy the scenic beauty and small-town pace of life, and for international buyers who are attracted to its unique heritage, many of them purchasing homes for use as guest-houses and B&B’s.

Among the properties currently on the market in Paarl exclusively through PGP is a three-bedroomed family home in the Boschenmeer secure golf estate.  Situated on a plot of close to 1000sqm, the home has spacious living areas ideal for both formal and informal entertaining.  It was designed by local architect Louis Phillips, a renowned and highly-respected name in the Paarl area.  The property is on the market at R3.395 million.
