Own and live in a National Monument on Port Alfred’s East Bank

It’s not every day that a National Monument becomes available for purchase, especially one you can comfortably live in while enjoying sweeping waterfront views.

Ideally positioned on Port Alfred’s East Bank, overlooking the ocean, the Royal Alfred Marina and Kowie River, a character-filled home which is one of only three National Monuments in the scenic coastal town has come onto the market. It is the only private residence in town to have been awarded this Heritage status.

Formerly known as Kowie House and now named White Gables, this beautifully restored, three bedroom Georgian-style home oozes charm and craftsmanship, with yellow wood floors, high ceilings, original antique fireplaces and brass detail. The property, which also includes a one bedroom, one bathroom guest cottage, two store rooms, a workshop, and three garages, is marketed by Pam Golding Properties at R3.295 million.

Built circa 1833, using a classical ‘U’ type layout fronted by two triangular gables - typical of the architecture of the era, all the original doors, windows, architraves, fireplace surrounds and ceilings were made from imported pine timber used as ballast on ships visiting Port Alfred at that time.

Says Pam Golding Properties Port Alfred agent, Lauren Meyer: “This is an exceptional home, with half-metre thick gable walls made from stone and lime mortar extracted locally. During the restoration every measure was taken to ensure that the materials used were of similar content and quality to those originally used in construction. Virtually all aspects of the home were appropriately refurbished to the highest possible standard.

Adds Isobel Meyer, Pam Golding Properties area principal: “At sunrise, the front porch offers panoramic views, while during the afternoon the sun-drenched back yard is an idyllic place to relax. Completing the picture is a swimming pool, lapa and built-in braai area.”

There is also three-phase electricity, and an underground/in wall gas piping system fitted with connections to the kitchen, fireplaces and braai, which together with an upgraded security system, add to the overall convenience and functionality of this expertly restored home.
