Historic home with nautical ties for sale in upper Kenilworth

An historic home which has come onto the market in Upper Kenilworth, Cape Town, is one of the final remaining links to the British Royal Navy’s former influence in South Africa.

PGP agents Myrna Duveen and Christiaan Steytler say the home is named for the first British naval commander at the Cape, Vice-Admiral Sir Keith Elphinstone. He played a vital role in the Battle of Muizenberg in 1795, which saw the British capture the Cape from the Dutch. Elphinstone was followed by another 60 naval commanders and then four senior naval officers, before the British Royal Navy formally ended its presence in the Cape, recalling Commodore Alistair Wemyss in 1976. At the time, Wemyss was living in the Upper Kenilworth home which still bears his predecessor’s name.

Duveen says the property is located in Valley Road, an upmarket section of Kenilworth located between Main Road and Edinburgh Drive, and known for its stately homes on spacious grounds. “This property is the ideal blend of old and new,” she says, “having a significant history and gracious character, but also having been beautifully restored and updated for contemporary living. It has panoramic views across the Southern Suburbs, and is located within walking distance of leading schools and amenities, making it an ideal choice for an upmarket family home. It represents the ultimate in secure city living.”

The home occupies a plot of close to 1500sqm and has four en suite bedrooms, including a master suite with dressing room and private balcony. The two family bedrooms, also located on the upper level, share another balcony, while the fourth suite is located on the ground floor and is ideal for guests, having its own private lounge. There are four elegant yet comfortable reception rooms, which flow onto a deep covered patio overlooking the terraced garden and private swimming pool. Other features include a fitted library, wood-panelled study and a small recording studio. The modern kitchen is fitted with white cabinetry and caesarstone counters, and has a free-standing Rosiers stove with double oven and gas hob.

The home has a double automated garage, as well as ample off-street parking for visitors. Security features include a guard house, alarm system and intercom network, as well as external beams.
