PGP agents Myrna Duveen and Christiaan Steytler say the home is named for the first British naval commander at the Cape, Vice-Admiral Sir Keith Elphinstone. He played a vital role in the Battle of Muizenberg in 1795, which saw the British capture the Cape from the Dutch. Elphinstone was followed by another 60 naval commanders and then four senior naval officers, before the British Royal Navy formally ended its presence in the Cape, recalling Commodore Alistair Wemyss in 1976. At the time, Wemyss was living in the Upper Kenilworth home which still bears his predecessor’s name.
