Gracious living and ocean views in sought after Voëlklip

A luxurious home built in the style of Sir Herbert Baker has come onto the market in the sought after Hermanus suburb of Voëlklip.

Located at the foot of the mountain known as “De Mond”, the property spans just under 3000sqm, and overlooks both Walker Bay and the Klein River lagoon.  The five-bedroomed residence was fully renovated in 2004 to the highest levels of modern comfort and convenience.  It is on the market exclusively through Pam Golding Properties, priced at R9.75 million.

PGP agent Paulette Van Den Bosch says the home was originally constructed in 1946 for two English spinsters, borrowing a number of design features typical of Sir Herbert Baker’s work.  These included using the rock from the adjacent mountain to build a panel on the base of the building, as well as the use of tongue-in-groove timber doors and arches inside the house – one of which still has its original klompies or ceramic brick detail.  More of these feature bricks are visible around the main fireplace and its surrounds, while the original sundial on a rock pedestal still stands in the garden.

Besides its notable design features, the home also boasts an unusual name, bestowed by the current owners.  “They named it Al Hambra,” says Van Den Bosch, “because its multiple arches, Mediterranean atmosphere and location between mountain and sea reminded them of the famous Spanish palace.”

“With five bedrooms, four bathrooms and three spacious reception areas, the home would be ideal for a large family or for those who entertain frequently,” she adds. “There is excellent flow from the kitchen through the dining and living areas, onto sea-facing patios overlooking the garden.  The master bedroom suite also opens onto a large terracotta patio with its own private viewing deck.  Additional guests can be accommodated in a cosy one-bedroomed guest cottage, while the garden has a jungle gym, pool and large flat lawn for children to enjoy.”

Among the home’s most striking features are its parquet floors made of Burmese teak and American oak, creating a sense of warmth and flow throughout the living areas. The kitchen also has unique finishes including custom hand-painted cupboard doors with lead glass display fronts.  A state-of-the-art digital alarm system and videophone at the entrance provide security and peace of mind, while there is ample garaging for up to six vehicles.

The location is one of the most sought after in Hermanus, offering a short walk to Grotto Beach as well as lovely walks on the mountain to the rear of the property.  This offers pristine fynbos trails and sparkling brooks which are home to numerous frogs including the ecologically sensitive platanna.  Other nearby attractions include a horse-riding centre, several schools and a golf course.
