Just an hour’s drive from the Cape Town International airport lies the Overbergtown of Villiersdorp – an ideal place to buy property if you’re looking for a family home in a wholesome country location but still need to commute to work in the city sometimes.
So says Bev Malan, owner of the Sotheby’s International Realty franchise that operates in this area. “Unlike most of the surrounding farms and towns which depend largely on wheat and canola farming,” she notes “Villiersdorp is encircled by prosperous fruit and wine farms, thanks to the proximity of the Theewaterskloof Dam and a different microclimate.
“It is probably best known for its apples, but also produces export quality pears, apricots, peaches, grapes and some excellent wines.”
Villiersdorpalso has a thriving tourism industry, thanks to a central location that makes it a good base from which to explore many of the Western Cape’s biggest attractions. The town lies on the Worcester Wine and Olive Route that includes 11 cellars and three olive farms, and Franschhoek, the picturesque gourmet food and wine capital of SA, is just 40km away to the northwest.
To the south, it is about an hour’s drive to Hermanus, famous for its whale watching opportunities and to the southeast, it’s a 30-minute trip to the hot springs of the Caledon Hotel and Spa.
“And for those who prefer not to go too far afield,” says Malan, “there are many hiking and biking trails in the surrounding countryside, a host of sailing and water sports possibilities on the huge Theewaterskloof Dam, a nine-hole golf course and avariety of ‘art holidays’ to enjoy courtesy of the growing resident community of artists.”
It is thus not surprising, she says, that Villiersdorphas become known as the "Pearl of the Boland", or that the demand for property in and around the town is growing. “For families, the appeal of Villiersdorp is enhanced by the fact that it has the excellent dual-medium De Villiers Graaff primary and high schools, while those seeking to ‘downshift’ to a country lifestyle have plenty to choose from in the way of plots and small farms, many of which already have some land in production.”
Among the most appealing of these at the moment is Badgerberg Estate, a 35ha farm with 8ha under vines, 12ha of apple orchards and a further 12ha of arable land, which is currently for sale through Sotheby’s International Realty for R12,5m.
The manor house on the farm offers four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a study, a spacious open-plan lounge and dining area with fireplace and a kitchen with separate scullery and pantry.There also is a separate two-bedroom guesthouse with its own kitchen and bathroom, a 60-seat tasting cellar, storage and cold rooms, double garaging and a swimming pool with lapa.
