Certification for JHI Properties’ head office
As hi-tech connectivity has seen the world increasingly become a ‘global village’, there is a growing awareness and need for the setting and upholding of international quality standards, says Thea Bezuidenhout, a director of JHI Properties.
In its drive to promote and achieve increasingly higher industry standards, the Sandton, Johannesburg headquarters of JHI Properties and the Pretoria regional office have been awarded the internationally recognised ISO 9001:2008 Certification, which incorporate the company’s commercial, industrial and retail operations as well as support functions.
“As JHI Properties continues to grow its business internationally, including expansion into Africa, our aim is to achieve increasing levels of quality service. In order to achieve that we need to ensure quality processes are in place, and our assessment and ISO accreditation shows we are on the right track,” says Bezuidenhout.
“Our preparation for the ISO certification process began in 2009 when we documented all our core business processes. This exercise helped to align people in the business to processes as well as the existing technology used in order to ensure maximum efficiency. This was used to develop our own internal training programme, iLearn, which enabled individual advancement and learning among staff members. The role-based, on-line iLearn courses were developed for staff in property and retail management divisions – particularly lease administrators, lease controllers, debtors’ administrators, portfolio and centre managers, as well as operations managers.”
She says importantly, and from an individual self-advancement perspective, the practicality of these courses has made it possible for staff to gauge how well they are conversant in their day-to-day tasks as well as providing a valuable learning tool. “One of the prerequisites to achieving ISO 9001:2008 certification is that a company has to have properly documented business processes which are related to the scope of certification. The thoroughness of our documentation has been a key factor in enabling JHI Properties to obtain this certification. These documented processes have been implemented and all staff operate with these in mind. Part of process documentation was to identify controls and the effectiveness thereof as well as risks and how to mitigate them.”
Adds Bezuidenhout: “We have also completed staff training regarding the ongoing importance of both achieving and retaining the ISO certification, conducted numerous assessments both internally and then externally via the SABS – the latter which was completed in two stages. The SABS will continue to conduct assessments every six months to ensure the ISO standards are upheld. In the interim, we are pursuing this process in regard to our Cape Town and Durban operations, which we believe will be successful as they follow similar processes and controls as JHI’s head office and Pretoria regional office.”
