PGP’s MD for the Boland and Overberg regions, Annien Borg, says it was timeous that the company should have a full-time presence in Worcester. “This is such an important hub for this region,” she says, “and continues to grow in importance as an employer and source of amenities for the surrounding communities, from schooling and shopping to sporting and medical facilities. Worcester is the commercial, agricultural and industrial hub of the Western Cape interior, with major employers including Rainbow Chickens, KWV, GRW Engineering and EPOL, as well as the numerous commercial outlets associated with the wine industry. The nearby Hex River Valley is also a major supplier of fruit, producing over 17 million cartons of table grapes every year, while the drier southern portions of this valley are becoming increasingly popular for olive cultivation. Worcester is also well known as a major training and teaching centre, with some of the country’s best facilities for teaching the visually- and hearing impaired. In short, this is a thriving commercial hub which is growing in size and status every year. As a result, there is increasing demand for property in the area, and we are delighted that we are finally able to service this market with dedicated local agents - namely Kerstine Carstens and Lizette Bronn.”
Tourism is also a growing industry for the town, not least because of its spectacular setting. Worcester is surrounded by several mountain ranges, and the Breede and Hex Rivers flow on either side of the town, creating a watersports playground. The Breede River Valley is now the largest wine-producing region in South Africa and as a result, Worcester has become sought after tourist destination for wine-lovers - the Worcester Wine Route boasts 11 wineries, with a further 22 included in the Breedekloof Wine Route. Other local tourism highlights include the KWV Brandy Cellar and the Karoo Botanical Gardens, situated on the slopes above the town. The moderate climate and winter snowfalls also contribute to the area’s growing popularity with weekenders and holidaymakers.
PGP’s area manager for the region, Surina du Toit, says property in Worcester remains very affordable. “One can obtain an entry-level home in Worcester from as little as R600 000,” she says, “with larger family homes costing anything from R900 000 upward. The top end of the market sees well-preserved historic homes and larger modern properties sold for up to R2.8 million. There is a wide range on offer, encompassing everything from basic small residential offerings to old monuments in beautiful tree-lined streets, many of them bearing the unique Worcester gable, riverside homes on the Breede, modern houses situated along the golf course, as well as lifestyle and commercial farms.
