The South African World Long Drive Championships came to fruition in a nail-biting Semi- and Final which took place on Saturday 26th August at the NuGolf Practice Centre in Alberton.  Despite the freezing weather and howling wind, all of the competitors played their hearts out and the distances they achieved were quite spectacular.  The RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship presented by FNB Home Loans is now in its ninth year in South Africa and is finally starting to receive the same recognition it attracts internationally.

Spectator turnout was excellent, clearly indicating increased interest in the sport amongst sports fans.  Dale Hayes, an eminent name in golfing circles was the master of ceremonies at the event, evoking laughter and a full day’s entertainment.  He even managed to make light of the fact that Tommy Brooks, 32, had his car stolen the night before the Final.

Tommy Brooks was the overall winner of the Men’s Division with a drive of 352.7metres.  Brooks has played golf since the age of 11 and competed in eight RE/MAX World Long Drive Championships, this year being his first win.   "The competition has always been very hard especially with the calibre of players that compete, the pressure is incredibly intense.  I'm so overwhelmed and know that winning today has changed my life especially because of what happened yesterday with our car being stolen,” said Brooks.

Once again Nicole Loesch won the Ladies Division with a drive of 249.9m. This young powerhouse is really a force to be reckoned with in the Long Driving scene.  After winning in 2006, Loesch (19) represented South Africa in the 2005 RE/MAX World Long Drive International Championships.

The Seniors Division winner was Sammy Daniels who hit the 319m mark.  Daniels (45) is a well known name in golfing circles, having been a pro-golfer for many years.  He previously won Long Driving competitions in ’92, ’93 and ’94.

The first three places in each division were as follows:

Senior Division
