Apartment to rent
Enjoy villa-style living with a private lush garden and terracotta tiles, just 500m from Oxford Village and Old Main Road — one bedroom, one bathroom, parking.
You come in through the garden, and for a moment you forget which country you`re in.
It`s lush and green, with French garden furniture waiting under the leaves. Ahead of you are double French doors. You push them open, and you`re not walking into a flatlet. You`re walking into a Spanish villa.
Light spills across a freshly tiled floor. Four little French windows line the wall, and an ornate mirror stretches across the adjoining wall, catching the garden and throwing it back into the room. Above you, a hardwood ceiling. The walls are painted white, the TV bracket is already up, and a trellis door and burglar gate keep the world outside.
You stay here a while. Then you follow the passage, and the floor changes under your feet. Brown terracotta tiles, old and warm and beautiful. Every door you pass is framed in solid dark wood and hangs on Victorian-era hinges. Someone looked after this place for a long time.
The first door on your right opens onto the bedroom, the one bedroom of this flatlet. Hardwood floors. Wooden beams running across the roof. A ceiling fan that cools the room and lights it. Built-in wardrobes, curtains, and a little counter by the French window, with room for a desk or a vanity. This is where you`ll write, plan and dream, with the garden for company. And at the end of the day, this is where you`ll sleep.
Next to the bedroom is the kitchen, black and white tiles under dark wooden beams. The counters are pitch black, and the cupboards are yellow wood. There`s a built-in oven and hob with an extractor, a double basin with a mixer, and cupboards above for your crockery. More French windows, more curtains. Cook something good. You`ll want to eat it in the garden.
Back in the passage, the bathroom is a surprise.
Blue mosaic floor tiles, in shade after shade of blue, like a Mediterranean tide. There`s a bath for the long evenings and a shower for the short mornings, with an arched mirror and frosted French windows. Next to it is a separate toilet, finished in turquoise mosaic floor tiles, with its own French window and a door that locks.
At the end of the passage, a little rack to hang your coat and other paraphernalia.
And then you step back outside, into the garden, and realise what this place really is. It isn`t just a flatlet. It`s a quiet life, with a Spanish villa`s character, a garden for your mornings and a front door that feels like yours.
And the location makes it easy. Oxford Village is 500 metres away by road, and the Old Main Road business precinct is close by. So are all the schools, malls and places of worship you could need. Easy access to the M13 and N3 takes you towards Pinetown and Durban in one direction and Pietermaritzburg in the other.
