South Africa's reputation for world-class lifestyle estates has received another boost, with Val de Vie Estate in the Cape Winelands earning recognition as one of the world's leading wellness communities in the 2026 Wellness Real Estate Atlas.
Compiled by the Wellness Communities & Real Estate Initiative (WCREI), the report evaluated some of the most innovative wellness-focused residential developments across the globe, assessing how they promote physical, mental, social, environmental, economic, and civic wellbeing.
Val de Vie was placed in the Atlas' highest category, "Top of Class", alongside internationally recognised developments such as Lake Nona in Florida, Serenbe in Georgia, and Gelephu Mindfulness City in Bhutan. The report described the Paarl-based estate as one of the most comprehensive private wellness estates in Africa.
What makes a wellness community?
The concept of wellness real estate has evolved significantly over the past decade. While traditional lifestyle estates often focused on security, golf courses, and recreational facilities, wellness communities take a broader approach.
According to the Atlas, successful wellness communities integrate six key pillars:
- Physical wellbeing
- Mental wellbeing
- Social connection
- Environmental stewardship
- Economic wellbeing
- Civic participation
Rather than simply providing amenities, wellness-focused developments are designed to encourage healthier lifestyles, stronger communities, greater access to nature, and long-term quality of life.
Why South Africa is well positioned
South Africa's estate market has long been ahead of many international trends. From the Winelands and Garden Route to Johannesburg and KwaZulu-Natal's North Coast, lifestyle estates have become increasingly popular among buyers seeking security, outdoor living, and a stronger sense of community.
Many of the country's leading estates already incorporate features commonly associated with wellness real estate, including extensive walking and cycling trails, nature conservation areas, sports facilities, community gathering spaces, schools, healthcare services, and mixed-generation living.
As remote and hybrid work models continue to reshape buyer priorities, access to lifestyle amenities and quality of life has become as important as proximity to traditional business hubs.
Why Val de Vie stood out
The Atlas highlighted Val de Vie's explicit six-pillar wellness philosophy as one of the key reasons it achieved top-tier status.
Spanning 917 hectares in the Paarl-Franschhoek Valley, the estate includes more than 300 hectares of parks, nature reserves, lakes, farms, and open spaces. Residents have access to extensive wellness infrastructure, including multiple fitness centres, swimming pools, equestrian facilities, polo fields, golf facilities, walking and cycling trails, restaurants, and wellness services.
The report also noted the estate's focus on multigenerational living, with retirement communities, family neighbourhoods, and lifestyle amenities integrated into a single ecosystem.
Beyond its physical infrastructure, the Atlas recognised the work of the Val de Vie Foundation, which has raised more than R40 million for surrounding communities, supporting education, entrepreneurship, and social development initiatives in the Paarl-Franschhoek region.
Estate living continues to evolve
The recognition comes at a time when estate living continues to attract strong buyer demand across South Africa. Security remains one of the primary motivations for buyers, but lifestyle considerations are increasingly influencing purchasing decisions.
Today's buyers are looking for more than a home. They want access to outdoor spaces, opportunities for recreation, a sense of community, and environments that support physical and mental wellbeing.
This is particularly evident in the growing popularity of estates that offer integrated lifestyle experiences, whether through nature reserves, wellness centres, sports facilities, schools, retirement living, or mixed-use neighbourhoods.
The future of estate living
As wellness becomes a greater priority for homeowners globally, South Africa's leading lifestyle estates may find themselves increasingly aligned with international wellness real estate trends.
The success of developments such as Val de Vie suggests that the future of estate living may extend beyond traditional luxury and security, focusing instead on creating communities that support healthier, more connected, and more sustainable ways of living.
For buyers, this shift means estate living is no longer simply about where you live, but how your environment contributes to your overall quality of life.
