The Shard crowned the Tallest Building in Europe
7/6/2012 8:29:33 AM
The Shard which is located on the southern bank of the Thames, towers over the iconic London Bridge Quarter. Architect Rienzo Piano calls the Europeans Union's new tallest building a "Vertical city". The Shard tower opened on the 5th of July 2012 and will house the equivalent of a whole vacant neighbourhood.

The Shard will open with 26 floors of vacant office space. The building is almost entirely owned by the state of Qatar. The 72-story mixed-use development, which have 360 degree views that extend 40 miles across the city, involves an extraordinary feat of both design and engineering. The Shard is somewhat eco-conscious.

The steel that was used in construction, 20% was recycled, while 95% of the waste produced during construction was recycled as well. Also, sky gardens on each floor promote natural ventilation and improve air quality.

Whether one loves or hates the newest, tallest addition to London’s skyline is probably a matter of taste. Those who want to see the legendary views have to wait until February 2013, when it will be open to the public.
