Harrington House gets an Extreme Makeover!

The five story office block, Harrington House in Barack Street in Cape Town has towered over the city for the past 80 years. Deeply rooted into Cape Town’s heritage, so was its architecture and design until a recent makeover that has restored both the exterior and interior of the building, and is quickly attracting upmarket and fashionable tenants.
The restoration was managed by Devmark Design Interiors and Renovations together with Devmark Construction. The team saw this as the perfect opportunity to create an ambient space that remained in line with its current industrial expression. The building is situated in the city’s fashion hub and houses some of South Africa’s top clothing design companies.
Says Dejane Ehlers Steyl, “We wanted the entire building to retain its industrial look and feel but with a modern twist. We are very happy with the results.”
The building’s exterior was severely outdated with face brick and splashes of pink paint. Modern and bold colours of red, charcoal and mushroom have since transformed the outer surface. Inside, the lobbies have all been tiled in very large, high-gloss black and mushroom coloured tiles. Clever lighting in the hallways has helped to create a sense of space in an otherwise dark and restricting area. New lifts were installed and floors were screed to accommodate the heavy load of trolleys and deliveries, while bathrooms we kept simple with built in vanities and square on-top basins.
Taking just nine months to complete, the overall design maintains the integrity of this historical building and provides many of the features that are demanded by today’s lifestyle while building on the charm of Cape Town.
