The bustling town of Mossel Bay lies on the slopes of Cape St Blaize with the Outeniqua Mountains as its backdrop, and while many see it just as a holiday town, Mossel Bay is the permanent home to many residents who have made their homes in the picturesque town.

The perfect location of Mossel Bay means that it is in close proximity to Cape Town, Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), Oudtshoorn, Plettenberg Bay and Knysna. But that doesn’t mean that nothing happens in the coastal town. Mossel Bay is known for the Mossgas Operation and its port is a hub of activity on a daily basis.

Despite the hustle and bustle of the industrial operations in town, Mossel Bay is known for its relaxed and unhurried hospitality. A surprising fact about the town is that the Guinness World Record Book has awarded Mossel Bay with a second place finish in the list of cities around the world with the mildest year round weather. The town is steeped in history, dating as far back as 1448 when the explorer Bartholomew Dias first stepped ashore and encountered the Khoi San people. The name Mossel Bay, however, can be credited to Dutch explorer Paulus van Caerden in 1601, inspired by a cave in which he found a collection of mussel shells. This rich history can be seen in the historic buildings dotted throughout the town, including the nearly 200 houses which were built by Cornish stonemasons a century ago.

The first ever post office in South Africa is also located in the town and is still used to sort post from.

Among the surf community, Mossel Bay is also seen as one of the favourite spots to catch a wave, but the watersport activities are not limited to just surfing. The waters are also a frequent visiting spot for windsurfers and kiteboarders.

For those who prefer staying on dry land, the prestigious Pinnacle Point Golf Estate is also situated in the town and is frequently ranked as one of the best golf courses in the country.
