5 Best Golf Courses in South Africa

Golf Digest South Africa’s biennial list of the best golf courses in South Africa will be updated again this year, in the mean time we take a look at their previous top 5 and property surrounding them.

This breathtaking course came in first place on the Golf Digest list and it is easy to see why. With its undulating course surrounded by the majestic landscape of the South African bush, golfers have to be creative to make each swing count.

Bordering the Kruger National Park means that many sightings of hippo, antelope, buffalo and even elephant are reported. If you lose your ball in the water, it is best to just let it go as a crocodile or two might be lurking nearby.

Coming in at second place, the Fancourt Links is a course that challenges golfers to their limits. Designed by world renowned golfer, Gary Player, the course echoes designs of other famous links around the world, while staying true to the beauty surrounding it.

Situated in George you can expect typical Garden Route weather which means some days you will have to play against strong winds or on others a wet course.

When a course was designed by one of the most prolific golf players in the world, you know that playing on this course will test your skills as a golfer.

However, even on your worst days you cannot help but be in awe of the surrounding beauty. Rolling hills and lush vegetation might not make your game any easier but it sure helps when you missed your shot at the hole by a few centimeters.

Tricky sand traps and challenging water hazards are just two things that makes this golf course such a favourite with golfers - yes, we asked, golfers likes to be challenged. However, this course is a fine example of the delicate balance between a challenging but enjoyable course. Staggered alongside the Bot River Lagoon, the course offers breathtaking views of the Kogelberg Mountains and Arabella’s own manicured and sculpted gardens.

It also carries the distinction of having one of the best finishing holes in the country! The only way to fully enjoy it would be to play each hole until you can finally say you saw the 18th hole at Arabella!

Nestled in the beautiful Berg River Valley, surrounded by the majestic Simonsberg Mountains, lies the Pearl Valley Golf & Country Estate. Pearl Valley boasts, among numerous other exclusive facilities, an iconic Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. Named the Best Conditioned Golf Course in the Western Cape for 2010, 2011 and 2012 by Golf Digest Magazine and awarded Compleat Golfer’s Five Star Experience Award for six consecutive years, it’s evident that it does indeed take a legend to make a legend.

Subtle details – from mismatched scatter cushions, to an unswept kitchen – can spell the difference between a potential buyer making an offer, or scratching your property off their list altogether. As much as you would love to be around to hear the passing comments as buyers amble through your abode, by choosing to remain at home during a showing, you set yourself at risk of becoming exactly that “subtle detail” that gets in the way of an offer.
