New Study: Number of city-dwellers to double by 2050

The United Nations has released a new study that predicts that the number of city-dwellers will double by the year 2050, 96% of this growth will occur in developing countries.

Currently 3.5 billion of the human population across the globe lives in cities, however according to the UN’s Director of Human Settlement over the next 37 years this number could increase with 2.5 - 3 billion.

In a recent news conference the UN’s Joan Clos said: “In all human history we have reached 3.5 billion of urban settlers, and in the next 30 years we are going to have 3 billion more. Imagine the changing rate — what we have done in all human history, we nearly will do in the next 30 to 40 years of history.”

Clos further warned that if cities around the globe weren’t ready for the large influx of people into its borders, that slum situations would spread at an alarming rate. Another factor would be how well policy makers would be able to deal with this influx - cities around the world would have to figure out how they will be able to provide affordable housing and other necessary amenities to the citizen’s of their cities.
