Situated approximately 25km outside of the Durban city centre, Amanzimtoti is a town that has grown from very humble beginnings into a vibrant residential and commercial node along the scenic South Coast.

Amanzimtoti - which means ‘Sweet Waters’ - got its name, according to local folklore, from King Shaka, who drank from the nearby river and referred to it as ‘sweet waters.’ Initially the town was established around the railway line which runs down the South Coast, as demand grew property demand expanded as well and today there is demand from not only holidaymakers but also from those seeking to make it their primary residency.

The thriving tourist industry forms a large part of the local economy but there is a lot to offer for permanent residents of Toti as well.

The property market

The greater Amanzimtoti area stretches from Athlone Park to Illovo Beach and includes areas such as Doonside, Doonheights, Kingsburgh, Winklespruit, Warner Beach and St. Winfreds.

Educational Institutes

There are several pre-primary, primary and high schools ( some voted in the top 100 National Schools) in the area. One such school is the highly acclaimed Kingsway High School, which was once where former Sharks rugby player Clyde Rathbone received his matric certificate.

Due to the proximity to Durban, many university students commute daily to either the Durban University of Technology or The University of KwaZulu Natal.

Having Fun

The warm weather and the superb beaches makes it almost impossible not to be an outdoor person!

The ocean is 22 degrees on average, which means that when there is a wave to catch you will find surfers in the water year-round. The fun however is not limited to those wanting to ride the waves, the nearby Aliwal Shoal is big attraction to those who prefers the world underneath the water.

Aliwal Shoal is internationally recognized as one of the top 10 dive spots in the world. Named after the the near-sinking of the 3 Masted vessel "Aliwal", Captained by James Anderson in 1849. Although the site is popular with divers year-round it is especially sought after between August and November, when the Grey nurse sharks (known locally as Ragged Tooth sharks or raggies) congregate here to mate.

For those who prefers to keep their ‘land-legs’ there is an abundance of golf courses along the South Coast and you will be hard-pressed to find a golf course with a better view than the Amanzimtoti Golf Course’s 18th hole which is literally situated on the beach.

Fashionistas can rest assured that the Galleria Regional Mall will satisfy their need to shop ‘till they drop. Housing renowned retailers, movie theatres and world class restaurants.

It is easy to see why so many holidaymakers fall in love with Amanzimtoti and decide to make their stay more permanent!
