Franschhoek’s favourite cottage now for sale

The cottage known as ‘Little Mount Nelson’ is one of the most photographed buildings in Franschhoek even though the town, as one of the oldest in the country, teems with picturesque historical sites.

The reason it catches the eye of so many, of course, is its unusual colour, and therein lies a tale. When the current owner purchased the cottage 12 years ago, he visited the world-famously pink Mount Nelson hotel in Cape Town, and decided to paint his new summer home the exact same shade. (The Mount Nelson Hotel was painted pink to celebrate the end of the First World War in 1918, and has remained so ever since. Paint specialists have now formulated a special colour, actually known as “Mount Nelson Pink” that is calculated to fade only to a certain exact degree between coats.)

Now, sadly,as he is not able to travel to SA anymore, this Dutch gentleman has to part ways with his Little Mount Nelson, which is filled with many happy memories of summer soirees, intimate dinner parties, lazing in the sun, gazing at the awe-inspiring mountains or just drinking in the beauty - and wine - of Franschhoek.

The two bedroomed Victorian cottage, on sale through Sotheby’s International Realty, is set on a 714sqm stand and has an open-plan living area with contemporary kitchen, a study/library, two bedrooms ensuite, a separate laundry and a single garage.

Double doors from the master suite open to a private patio overlooking the pool. There is also a front veranda and the stupendous mountain views can be enjoyed from either vantage point. The mature garden has its own irrigation system and the borehole supplies crystal clear drinking water.

The cottage also houses a valuable collection of South African artworks, and an interesting and eclectic assembly of designer furniture and antiques from all over the world, which are included in the R3,95m asking price. (Unfurnished: R3,195m).
