Artists in the village

Located just south of Johannesburg is the predominantly rural area of Walkerville, which many would associate with small holdings and farming.  “However,” says Steve House, Broker/Owner of RE/MAX Gateway, “every second Saturday of each month it is not the produce and livestock that bring visitors to the area, but the art.”

He notes that visitors to the area are treated to a wide variety of art works that are displayed and sold by artists along the Walkerville Business Hub on the second Saturday of every month from 9am to 4pm. The project, which is known as ‘Artists in the Village’, is a Walkerville Chamber of Commerce initiative, aimed at promoting the area along with the various businesses which operate in the region.  

“So far the initiative has been really successful in providing the artists with a platform through which to display their talent and to bring visitors to Walkerville. Each artist is required to pay R50 per day and all money is used for advertising and promoting the event,” says House. “Currently the artists are exhibiting their work at two different venues along the business hub: Thyme Square Garden Centre, which has a gift shop and tea garden for guests and at 84 On Main, which is a new shopping centre featuring a home-bake bakery and restaurant.  As the number of artists exhibiting grows, the goal will be to spread to another three venues along the business strip making it a very interesting art meander, with each venue having something different to offer.”

There is free access to visitors for each event with ample free parking, and aside from the art there is also lots of good food on offer.  The next event will be held on 8 December 2012 which will include Carols by Candlelight from 6pm in aid of local charities. “Just 20 minutes from Johannesburg and Alberton, Artists in the Village offers visitors a chance to see some amazing art and enjoy a wonderful day in Walkerville’s beautiful countryside,” House concludes.
