Google’s Pittsburgh offices

Google never disappoints when it comes to cutting edge office space, their latest addition is situated in a former cookie factory.



What’s the perfect recipe for an amazing workspace? Start with a 45,000 square-foot former Nabisco Factory in Pittsburgh. Give the employees a 4-day live-in session to amass likes, dislikes and determine their “ideal” workspace, and mixed them all together... That’s how Google does it, at least. Like all Google offices, the adaptive-reuse project, which is seeking LEED Gold certification, features several playful touches, and it also does a good job referencing Pittsburgh's industrial history.



Google Pittsburgh’s new offices, designed by the local architecture firm Strada, maintains not only the industrial bones of the original factory building, but also works to implement citywide themes (according to Strada, some of the interior design elements are based on an homage to Kennywood Amusement Park, a popular Pittsburgh theme park). Exposed catwalks and steel are meant to mirror the city bridges, while the original building structures  were implemented into modern designs. Natural light, sweeping citywide views and ample “creative” space all make for a comfortable space with a mind-body connection sure to get the brain pumping.



Google’s sustainability efforts went above and beyond their original adaptive reuse—much of the original building materials were reused during construction. And with nearby transit improvements underway, the revamping of the Nabisco Factory building also pushes for neighborhood improvements within the area—recycling at its finest.
