The Edge becomes largest LEED certified building in New York

Williamsburg luxury tower The Edge was recently awarded LEED Gold certification by the U. S. Green Buildings Council.

The news makes the Brooklyn building the largest residential building in New York City to become LEED Gold. The sexy waterfront residence has been a coveted place to live for New Yorkers and its new green status raises its appeal all the more.

The Edge was one of the first luxury buildings to go up in the artsy Williamsburg area, and many feel it was the catalyst that changed the neighborhood from artist residents to its current more preppy, parent-y crowd.

The building offers amenities that no other property could at the time, including indoor and outdoor pools, two fitness centers, game rooms, screening rooms, a spa, and balconies in many of its apartment overlooking the East River and Manhattan skyline.

Despite all of these excessive (and luxurious) amenities, the Edge has still managed to be extremely energy-efficient. Each unit has insulated walls to limit climate control needs, and low-flow fixtures to save water. The apartments also all have Energy Star appliances, as well as ample windows for natural light. During construction, 84 percent of the waste was recycled.
So, whatever is said of the building’s role in transforming and gentrifying the neighborhood, the Edge is an inspiration to other apartment buildings, showing that high-end living can also be environmentally friendly.
