Community preserves its heritage

A charming old stone house, which was built just after the Second World War and was saved from demolition three years ago by the Parkmore community, has been restored and is back on the market.

Jonathan Davies, Pam Golding Properties’ joint area manager, Hyde Park office says the ‘stone house’, as it is commonly known, is an original old Parkmore farmhouse and was built from locally sourced sandstone. Situated on the Riverclub border, the home has been placed on the market by Pam Golding Properties (PGP) for R3,9 million.

While the stone farmhouse was not old enough to be protected as a National Heritage site, the community felt it was well worth preserving, as it was one of the original homes in the area and a much-loved landmark. The Parkmore Community Association heard the voice of the community and contacted the owner who agreed to restore the home to its former glory.

The home and its garden have been beautifully restored in line with expert guidance obtained from the Heritage and Historic Foundation. Today it continues to stand tall among the neighbouring houses in Parkmore’s Virginia Avenue.

The property has been re-styled into an eclectic mix of the old and the modern, continues Davies. The redesigned home features a Smeg gas stove and solid brass fittings. Two deep, free standing baths, marble-topped cabinets with classic taps finish two generous bathrooms. Beautiful, high moulded ceilings, a 1940 corrugated iron roof and solid teak floors that hark back to an earlier age offset ultra modern comforts and give the home the look and feel of the 1940s. While little remains of the original lead-glass windows, large, new wooden frames give the appearance of being entirely original.

During the renovation a double garage was carefully added to the house. This was constructed out of sandstone in order to blend in seamlessly with the original building. The garden cottage is ideal for renting out or for staff. The garden has been landscaped anew and shows tremendous promise. A small feature pool completes the picture.

Davies believes the refurbished three-bedroomed character home will appeal to someone who appreciates its earthy homeliness and who enjoys living in a home steeped in nostalgia. Situated a stone’s throw from Sandton and within close proximity to some of the finest private and government schools, it will prove convenient for a small family or businessperson. It also has the potential to be used as medical rooms.

Parkmore has only a small handful of these old farm homes and their heritage gives such character to the area, observes Davies.
