Looking for inspiration on how to achieve the ultimate room for your children which reflects your taste as well as theirs? Look no further...

Vibrant Chic

This stylish space mixes patterns, color, and fabrics to create the perfect blend of chic. Designer Sally Henderson included a decorative headboard to "ground the room, kind of like a fireplace mantel," she says.

Sailors’ dream

Sailing away with a nautical look, designer Jodi Macklin gave an avid boating family’s coastal vacation home in Delaware a casual beach feel. She designed the boys’ bedroom as a ship's hull, complete with a ribbed ceiling and berths.

Canary Flight

Designer David Netto — well known for his baby furniture line — outfitted the children's bedroom in a New York apartment with a vintage bench from Aero. It seems to smile beneath a pair of photographs by Jeffrey Milstein of two jets headed for the sky.

Rocking the room

Black can actually work for a teenager's room. Just add pops of bright color, like a graphic pillow, to keep the space from feeling too stark. Designer Windsor Smith painted her son's room in the hue for a rock-star feeling.

Global twist

A cramped girl's room in a Park Avenue apartment becomes intimate and worldly thanks to a high-bohemian theme by designer Daniel Sachs. "It was difficult, almost like doing boat design," he says of the space where he successfully fit a bed, a closet, a desk, and a chair.

Toy Story

To display an eight-year-old boy's toy collection, Sachs inset shelves into his bedroom walls and lined them with turquoise billiard cloth. An antique map papered to the wall adds worldly character.

Pretty in Pink

Amanda Nisbet designed her preteen daughter’s room to be considered but cheery. She used a pink, brown and navy scheme and included playful, graphic art. "It's a room she can grow into,” says Nisbet.

Colour inspiration

A customized mural from Surface View adds edge to the room of the teenage daughter of Pinecone Hill's Annie Selke. It's based on a Japanese kimono from the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. "I didn't want to do a big headboard in here because the ceiling is low, about eight feet," explains Selke. "But the room needed something dramatic, and this is it. It doesn't take up any extra space and it adds a lot of look.”

Marilyn in pink

Katie Couric and her daughter teamed up with designer Karen Reisler for a whimsical room alive with vivid colors. Personalized accents — from the girl's own artwork to framed photos of her idol, Marilyn Monroe — show off her individual style.
