Cliff House - Sustainable design with modern style

Designed by shipping-container-architecture mavens, Architecture for A Change (A4AC) and inspired by Steve Jobs’ cutting edge product design, Cliff House is an example of how sustainable design can modern and affordable.

Built from largely recycled materials and shipping containers, Cliff House situated in Northcliff, Johannesburg is an 100 percent off-the-grid home.

The bulk of the home is made up from old shipping containers, sitting atop a steel frame - whose components were transported to the site inside inside the shipping containers (can you say win!)

Cliff House though is more than just a shipping-container-marvel - the house boasts with sustainable features up the wazoo. For example, the floors are made of recycled wine corks and the insulation in the walls comes from repurposed plastic bottles.

There is a borehole on the property that provides all the water for the home and solar panels takes care of the electricity needs. Windows are strategically placed to ensure the residents would never need to switch on lights during the day, and the natural ventilation eliminates the need for an air conditioner.

Cliff House is an example of what can be done when the need for a sustainable, economical home meets futuristic, sleek design - and we have to say, we are enthralled!
