#DesignAlphabet - Design terms explained

Not sure what the difference is between an armoire and bachelor’s chest? Confused by feng shui? We explain it all in our #DesignAlphabet series

We kick off our design series with Arabesque

Many would confuse arabesque with the ballet term but for designers arabesque describes a pattern with multiple interlaced flowers, foliage, fruits, urns, and scrolls, often symmetric plaster castings adhered to wood doors and framed wall panels.

This design element has stood the test of time with examples being found as far back as the 8th century. This pattern is often found in Islamic mosques and Islamic art. The word isderived from latin meaning of Arabic design.

If you love the arabesque element but want to use it in a less permanent way you can always incorporate it in fabrics and finishes.
