Burst of colours in this South American town

There is no denying that the beautiful and historic Bo Kaap is South Africa’s most colourful ‘hood  - but in South America there is a town that many considers the most colourful town in the world.

The Colombian town of Guatapé is a small town with a mere 5000 residents and was recently photographed by Jessica Devnani, a photographer and travel blogger from Toronto, Canada.

Her pictures show doorways, balconies, steps and even furniture painted in all manner of hues and colours throughout the city. The town is located on the shores of a sprawling artificial lake called Embalse Guatapé.

The fresco like paintings depict animals, people and shapes that cover many buildings. “The entire town is colourful and cheerfully painted. Apparently it started with families painting images along the sides of their homes and it has just evolved from there.

Located approximately two-hours’ drive away from Medellín, Guatapé is popular with tourists and is known for offering a peaceful break from the city, while also featuring a stunning panoramic view of nature and the surrounding scenery from the top of its hill.
