Tesla introduces solar roof tiles

With an updated Powerwall and the launch of innovative solar roof tiles, Tesla is taking its vision "one-stop solar and storage experience" to a whole new level.

The tiles comes in four styles and are made from glass, and according to Tesla and SolarCity who jointly unveiled the product, the panels are intended to be a more attractive way to add solar technology to homes.

The Powerwall 2 is the newly updated version as the original Powerwall and stores twice as much energy and twice as much power as it is predecessor. Powerwall 2 could power a four-bedroom home for an entire day.

According Tesla and SolarCity, combined with the Solar Roof you should be able to have a 100% renewable energy for the home.

During the release of the product, Elon Musk, showed the audience footage of it being dropped on the ground to showcase its strength, saying that “it’s never going to wear out, it’s made of quartz, it has a quasi-infinite lifetime.”

The presentation took place on the set of TV show ‘Desperate Housewives’, which ended in 2012. For the event, Tesla stripped a series of houses on the fictional Wisteria Lane of their old roofing material and replaced it with one of four visually similar new styles of solar tile – Textured Glass, Slate Glass, Tuscan Glass or Smooth Glass.

"We need to make solar panels as appealing as electric cars have become," said Musk. "The goal is to have solar roofs that look better than a normal roof."
