Aliwal Shoal is internationally recognized as one of the top 10 dive spots in the world. Named after the the near-sinking of the 3 Masted vessel "Aliwal", Captained by James Anderson in 1849. Although the site is popular with divers year-round it is especially sought after between August and November, when the Grey nurse sharks (known locally as Ragged Tooth sharks or raggies) congregate here to mate.

For those who prefers to keep their ‘land-legs’ there is an abundance of golf courses along the South Coast and you will be hard-pressed to find a golf course with a better view than the Amanzimtoti Golf Course’s 18th hole which is literally situated on the beach.


Amanzimtoti normally receives about 783mm of rain per year, with most rainfall occuring mainly during mid summer. The monthly distribution of average daily maximum temperatures shows that the average midday temperatures for Amanzimtoti range from 22.1°C in July to 27.2°C in February. The region is the coldest during July when the mercury drops to 9.5°C on average during the night.
