Alberton Estate Agent taken by surprise when she asked for animal shelter donations on Facebook

RE/MAX Superior - Mulbarton estate agent, Monique Louw made a Facebook post on May 12th asking for food and blanket donations for local SPCA’s - and what started out as a humble request has become an incredible story!

The post that started it all

This plea for help has resulted in a staggering donation of roughly 20-25 tons of food in just 48 hours. Monique collected more than 5 tons by herself during the course of Friday and Saturday, with the rest being delivered by the bakkie load from various people!

She reports that one man had even bought R20 000 of food at the Spar, adding that the response was just overwhelming!

“We have seen monetary donations come in from as far as Australia, and with the amount of food we received we can now send food to other SPCA offices such as Randfontein, who literally has nothing!” she said. There have also been donations towards the Irwin Animal Rescue Centre, SPCA Sandton, and Alberton.

She estimates that they have helped over 1000 dogs for now and while this drive has been way more successful than she ever anticipated, it won’t end here. Her next project is aimed towards The People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) in Soweto.

“I am still collecting throughout the week, and many Pick ‘n Pay’s have donated bags of torn dog food. I am hoping to get companies like Purina, Royal Canin, and others to become involved by donating their bags of 'damaged' dog food,” she says.

“No dog should be without food or shelter, and there is just not enough financial support from the government.”

At the moment, each SPCA has roughly a 100 dogs and 30-40 cats, while Irwin’s has around 172 dogs, and due to their location, they receive little to no support. The PDSA even has a learning center to inform dog owners about things such as spaying their pets to prevent breeding and more hungry mouths to feed.

“I collect food and blankets directly from people’s homes, businesses and drop-off points simply because it is more convenient for them, many people do want to help but they don’t want to drive to the shelters or SPCA.”

She advises that if you would like to help, you should donate food and blankets - you can see where your donation goes to and the difference it makes in the lives of these animals.
