Mona Lisa’s home up for sale

The smile that intrigues to this day belongs to that of Mona Lisa, and if scholars are right the villa that once belonged to the silk merchant whose wife Leonardo da Vinci painted is now up for sale.

Situated a mere five kilometers outside of Florence, Italy the Villa Antinori is up for sale with the cool price tag of €20 million (R333 million).

The villa was owned by the family of the silk merchant, Francesco del Giocondo, whose wife, Lisa Gherardini, has long been believed to have been the famous model for da Vinci’s painting. 

Surrounded by lemon groves, the villa was last on the market in 1960s when it was sold by a famous winemaking family, the Antinoris.

The property marketed through Lionard Luxury Real Estate boasts with a chapel and extensive grounds with a driveway lined by cypress trees that ends in an Italian garden. The garden was redesigned by the British architect and garden designer Cecil Pinsent in the early part of the last century.

“Amongst the 1,700 properties in our portfolio, this is one of the most interesting historic homes which we have in Tuscany, one of the most requested regions in the luxury sector,” said Dimitri Corti, the founder of Lionard Luxury Real Estate
