Plan ahead for the M1 rehabilitation

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) in conjunction with The City of Johannesburg, will be undertaking a large improvement project of the M1 at Oxford, Federation Bridges and Double Decker.

The JRA will be spending R1.4-billion on the improvement of roads, storm water infrastructure and bridges in the 2015/2016 financial year to support economic growth and development by reducing traffic congestion, cutting down on travel time and facilitating the movement of people, goods and services.

This forms part of a larger strategic investment in the city’s infrastructure.

Double Decker work phases and effects on traffic
The existing traffic on both carriageways is of such a nature that work on the bridge decks requiring lane closures will be undertaken at night. During week days, either the left lane or the right lane may be closed to traffic between the hours of 09:30 and 14:30.

During the week, night closures will take place:

Between 19:00 and 20:00:        1 lane on either the left or right hand side
Between 20:00 and 04:00         2 lanes on either the left or right hand side
Between 04:00 and 05:00:        1 lane on either the left or right hand side

On weekends the following closures will occur:

Between 05:00 and 19:00 Saturday:                     1 lane on either the left or right hand side of the carriageway
Between 19:00 on a Saturday to 05:00 Monday:     2 on either the left or right hand side of the carriageway

The repair of the bridge deck beam corbels will be carried out when the bridge deck is fully propped (from ground level). This will entail the closure of one lane on both carriageways for a period of time not exceeding 7 days and the public will be informed of the exact period.
