Luxury waterfront living within easy reach of Sandton

With more than 6km of crystal-clear navigable waterways, The Islands Estate is one of the most sought-after luxury lifestyle estates on the southern shores of Hartbeespoort Dam, so there is always excitement among potential buyers at the launch of any new residential development in the estate.



 And the second phase of the Baybridge Canal Waterfront Villas complex is no exception, says Iris Venter, the area specialist for the Chas Everitt International property group.

The key feature of The Islands is of course the system of canals that meander between the luxury waterfront homes, and enable access to the Hartbeespoort Dam itself via two bi-directional water locks. The water in this system is kept pristine by being circulated through an artificial wetland system that consists of a series of interconnecting dams covered with water-loving plants and reeds.



Environmental protection is a major focus of the development as a whole and the estate not only provides for its own water needs but also recycles its waste water for irrigating the grass verges. Indigenous trees are protected and relocated if necessary and the wetlands and dams have become home to a wide variety of birds and other wildlife, as have the estate’s extensive parkland areas.

Safe walking trails have been laid out across an 8ha communal park at the centre of The Islands and in greenbelt areas between the houses, and other outdoor facilities include a multifunctional sports oval and terraced amphitheatre as well as a nine-hole mashie golf course, two tennis courts and a chess garden.



There is also a 420sqm clubhouse with function facilities, pool and waterfront access. Nearby shopping facilities include the Village Mall, Sediba Plaza and the Mountain Lake Shopping Centre, and for families who would like to make The Islands their permanent home, the prestigious Pecanwood College is close by on the adjacent Pecanwood Estate.

And indeed, says Venter, upgrades to the major roads leading to the Hartbeespoort Dam have made the area an increasingly popular permanent residential choice for professionals and executives who work in northern Johannesburg or Pretoria, but want to live somewhere more peaceful and relaxed.
