Stilbaai market sizzles into summer

The property market in Stilbaai on the Cape South Coast is booming as the town continues to attract the attention of real estate investors.


Located in a landmark setting at the top of the Kloofsig valley, this property offers beautiful sea and river views as well as five bedrooms, 3,5 bathrooms, three living areas and a double garage. It is for sale through Harcourts for R3,795m.

That’s the word from Kotie Cilliers, owner of the Harcourts Stilbaai franchise, who says: “Buyers are suddenly waking up to the advantages of living in this neat, clean coastal haven with its breath-taking scenery and outstanding amenities.

“Our sales volumes are skyrocketing and we are struggling to keep up with the demand, which is particularly high for homes in the R800 000 to R1,5m price bracket.”

More stock will become available, she says, in the form of the long-awaited Skulpiesbaai development, where 125 stands have been approved and will go on sale in December. “But for those who would like to get started on building their dream homes here right away, we also have a selection of other beautiful stands available at prices from R320 000 to around R1,5m.”

Only four hours’ drive from Cape Town and 1,5 hours from George, Stilbaai is spread out on the banks of the Goukou River, which is navigable for 14km and a drawcard for water-sports enthusiasts, yachtsmen and anglers.

Boasting two pristine Blue Flag beaches, Lappiesbaai and Preekstoel, the town is also known for its water quality, good environmental management, security and community services.

“Stilbaai’s well-managed municipality offers facilities such as a large community hall, library, two excellent primary schools and three retirement villages, which have already made it a popular holiday and retirement destination,” notes Cilliers. “And now it is attracting an increasing number of families to relocate here permanently.”

This trend, she believes, will accelerate when the upgrading and widening of the major route from the N2 to Stilbaai gets under way next year, and when the Stilbaai Private Hospital is opened. A fully-fledged hospital with 40 beds, it will have an ER, radiology department, two operating theatres, dialysis facilities and several specialists as well as medical suites with 12 consulting rooms.

“We already have good medical services in Stilbaai, including the Carewell Medical Centre, but the new private hospital is set to open the floodgates for more permanent residents, as it will form part of a larger lifestyle development, Stilbaai Dunes, where most of the stands have already been sold and there will be apartments for sale at prices from around R1,3m.”

Cilliers says the majority of sales currently being concluded by her office are cash transactions, although there is usually no problem with obtaining home loans for properties in Stilbaai if the buyers’ financial affairs are in order.
