Dirk matriculated in the Karoo town of Burgersdorp and there after followed a career in the Defence Force as a professional officer after completing his officer’s training at the Military Academy in Saldanha Bay. During his career Dirk held several staff and management positions in the field of military operations, intelligence, personnel and logistics. As a career officer he was constantly involved with the full spectrum of military training e.g. operational tactics, strategy, administration and management development. In this regards he was involved in aspects of curriculum and study material development, lecturing full time and part time at the various Military Schools and Colleges and also assessing officers and non commission personnel for competence. Due to further studies he was involved in many daunting projects as project manager or advisor here and abroad e.g. developing quality assurance systems for defence ammunition, designing the defence printing press and redes
